Why Flexible Jobs Are Great But Potential Nightmares

Over the past few years flexible jobs have become an increasing demand from a transient workforce. This requirement reflects insecurity in the job market and the need for people to ensure an income by keeping their options open while not having to re-locate.

These flexible jobs come in many shapes and sizes from offering flexible hours within a 40 hour week to freelance positions paying on a per action basis. The first offers a certain amount of stability whereas the later offers the ultimate in flexibility. The most popular, when searching for a living wage as opposed to an extra income, are telecommuting jobs on an 'employed' basis. These allow workers the stability of a contracted job but the freedom to work from home flexibly.

The problem arises when a search for one of these positions begins. In a telecommuting position an employee may never actually meet the employer and find themselves in one of these flexible positions unaware that they've been scammed and will never be paid. If an employer continues to do this he/she can get months of free work at no cost.

The answer, of course, is to do your research before accepting one of these positions, or get someone to do it for you. Can you get a referral from a previous or current employee; are they a registered business in a country that actually cares about these things?

If it's feasible ask for a retainer before the first weeks/month payment for a flexible job. If an employer is legitimate they should at least be able to give you their intentions in black and white.

Flexible jobs are the answer to many of the lifestyle restrictions imposed on many different groups within society: parents, the disabled, elderly, students and those that simply wish to be flexible. However, when applying for these flexible jobs make sure that they deliver on your expectations of payment before you start to put in the hours, they may become unpaid.
