When we hear the words "work at home" or "telecommute" we think of sitting in front of the computer in our pajamas with a steaming cup of coffee on one side and our kids playing quietly on the other. The coffee may not always be steamy hot and the kids may not always be playing quietly but there are definite advantages to working from home or telecommuting.

First of all is the convenience. It's tough to argue against being able to walk from your bedroom to your office in just a few easy steps. Working from home saves you the cost of commuting on public transit or, if you normally drive to work, telecommuting saves you gas money and wear and tear on your car not to mention the positive impact on helping to save the planet.

Then there's the flexibility. Need to run an errand? No problem. With a laptop or smart phone, you can stay connected wherever you are. In the case of freelancers, there is an added benefit of being able to take time off whenever you want or, if you so choose, staying connected to your work even when you travel.

While telecommuting parents of younger children may need to hire someone to watch the kids while they work from home, telecommuters with school age children may find that they can save on child care. Work at home parents with older kids can often do the school pick up and drop off while still meeting all the demands of their jobs. They may even have time to enjoy an after school soccer game or dance recital.

So where do you find these great jobs? They may be more plentiful than you think. In this current down economy, more companies are looking to use freelancers or having employees work from home. In the case of freelancers, companies save big on not having to pay benefits such as health insurance and paid time off. By having employees work from home, they can save on the cost of renting office space.

Internet search engines can help you to identify websites specializing in telecommuting work. Also, many of the major job board sites include work from home opportunities.
