You never expected to be looking up jobs for retirees. But your retirement dreams have turned into a nightmare. Your retirement investment funds have been hit hard with the collapse of the economy. Decide what kind of telecommuting work you are qualified to do. If you are an auto mechanic, perhaps you could handle auto warranty claims at home over the internet. As a janitor, you could set up a question and answer business regarding cleaning problems and sell solutions. If you have no particular trade or skill, find a a hobby, something you love to do and explore the internet to see what others have done for themselves with exactly that idea and copy how they work from home.

The sheer number of people seeking telecommuting employment these days is staggering, and that means if you are serious about wanting to work from home, you really must have an edge to help you rise above the crowd and increase your chances of being hired. This article will share three important qualities that telecommuting employers look for in potential employees.

Quality #1 - Professionalism

Everything about you from your first contact with the telecommuting employer MUST scream "professionalism". I stress this all the time to people but I think many people don't know exactly what I mean. When I say "professionalism" I mean portraying yourself as someone who is mature, responsible, dependable, businesslike and experienced. Even if you don't have experience with the specific position you are applying for, you should still have some real world experience with working in a professional setting. (Unless the job states that no experience is necessary; but you should still come across as mature and dependable.)

Make sure your resume and cover letter are in tip top shape! Make sure you use correct spelling and grammar; make sure your cover letter is brief and to the point, and make sure your resume accurately highlights your strongest skills and "sells you" to the employer. You don't want to lie on your resume, but there are ways to word your skills and experience that make them seem much more attractive. I go into that in my telecommuting guide in more detail, but in general be sure to read over your resume and cover letter with a critical eye. What would a telecommuting employer be thinking as he/she reads your application? Would a few questions pop up? If so, be sure to answer those questions satisfactorily.

Quality #2 - Enthusiasm, But Not Desperation

Eagerness and enthusiasm are other qualities telecommuting employers look for in their candidates, but if you're not careful this can easily tip the scales into desperation. Whatever you do, you DON'T want to ramble on and on about why you NEED to work at home, how badly you need this job, or launch into the endless reasons why you need this job. It may sound harsh, but telecommuting employers don't care what you need; they care only about what YOU can do for THEM.

To that end, you want to be sure to act confident in your own skills and experience and be clear about what you have to offer the company, while also being enthusiastic about the opportunity. It can be a delicate balancing act for sure, but it's important to portray yourself in the right light to increase your chances of being hired.

Quality #3 - Can-Do Attitude

Equally important as professionalism and enthusiasm is a "can-do" attitude. What that means is demonstrating your willingness to be flexible and dedicated to the company, and you start demonstrating that from your very first contact - with your resume and cover letter. One of the ways you can do this is by being flexible with the hours and salary you prefer. Likewise with the duties the job entails, and your eagerness to take on new challenges and learn new skills. It's okay to state your preferences, but you also want to make it clear that you are flexible and willing to negotiate.

Let me tell you a little secret: many telecommuting employers will train you if they suspect you are the right kind of person for their team - even if their ad specifies experience is needed and you do not have that experience. This depends on the company and the job you are applying for, of course. Some positions really do require experience. But in a general sense, if you have the right attitude and demeanor, many employers will invest their time and energy into teaching you what you need to know to do the job right.

In other words, an employer is more likely to hire the "right" kind of person who may not have the right skills, rather than hiring the "wrong" kind of person, even if they have all the skills and experience in the world! As you may have heard in numerous other contexts, attitude is everything. If you show the employer that you are ready and willing to jump in and become a valuable asset to the company, you have overcome one major hurdle to successful employment.

Finding Telecommute Employment: The dream of just about everyone is to work from home. Some call it the 30 second commute down the hall to the laptop. The challenge is in finding these jobs.

First, what is a telecommute job and, more importantly, do they even exist?

They involve earning your living just like always, but you never leave home. All of your work is done over the internet. And yes, they definitely exist. Many people now earn their living from the kitchen table. Some are salespeople, others are data entry people and others do all sorts of things as they work from home.

If you seek telecommute employment, you can start on the internet itself. Start with simple searches like "work from home jobs" and see where that takes you. Also,

Forums are a great way to meet people who can offer experience or are doing what you hope to do. Be specific in your web searches, name career names, product names or companies you want to inquire about.
One thing you should never have to do is pay up front for information or leads. Some of these places are expert at collecting your money and little else. The information you seek is free.
The basics you will need at home is internet access, a computer and some area to work in. If you will be involved with talking on the telephone, make sure that your work area can be made silent while you are on the phone.
What is becoming extremely popular is for people to create their own work from home. What is involved here is building their own web site.
This may seem like rocket science, but it actually isn't. It does require patience, though and the will to stay at it. You can have a web site page hosted for free like at Squidoo or Hubpages.com or, for a tiny fee, at other places.
Google has an excellent free library of lessons and courses that can be taken free. So do the other two places mentioned above.
You'll need something to sell so you make inquiries about affiliate programs where basically, someone else produces a product and you sell it. They handle shipping and everything. It's the best way to start creating your own form of telecommute employment.

Whatever you do, remember that the internet is still in its infancy and there are not many rules, regulations or laws to govern it. It is much like the old wild American west. There are plenty of con men and snake oil salesmen who will take your coin and hand you dirt.

Telecommute employment is real and it is growing by leaps and bounds as office and shop space is becoming more and more expensive and companies become desperate to save money. You can also create your own. Whatever you do, go slowly and you will do well.

Choosing among self employment ideas and launching a business is not for everyone. You may be one of the many professionals reporting to a job you hate because you don't want anything to do with business ownership. You're satisfied with working for someone else, at least for now, but you don't know of any other option for working at home other than being your own boss. There is another way, and it's important to understand the difference between being self-employed and being employed in a work at home job. Here's what you need to know:

One Requires Selling, One Does Not

Unless you're hired for a sales position or to sell for clients, work at home jobs don't require you to sell. One of the frustrations of self employment for some people is that you're always selling yourself. If you don't sell you don't make money, and that can be devastating. There's no doubt that you have to sell yourself to employers during the application process, but once you land a work at home job, you're done. You're not constantly selling to earn a paycheck. Any "work at home job" that requires you to buy inventory and sell it is a scam. There are legitimate jobs that will pay you a check to put your skills to work for them.

One Is Full of Legal Hassles, One Isn't

Self employment ideas can lead to many legal hassles. You may have to register your business to get a license. If you choose to incorporate, then you have to form your corporation and file the paperwork on an annual basis to keep it in good standing. Then there are the contracts, non-disclosures, terms of service and other documents that you'll need to protect yourself in typical business transactions. If you're creating or using content, technologies or media, then you have to handle copyright and other intellectual property issues. You can avoid most of these issues as an employee working at home or as a contractor. You may have to sign agreements as a condition of getting hired, such as an Independent Contractor Agreement, but that's it. The legal hassles fall to the business owner, not you.

One Offers Benefits, One Doesn't

Insurance benefits can make all the difference between you pursuing your work from home dream and staying employed outside the home. Not every work at home job offers benefits, but some do. Some telecommuting jobs offer competitive benefits, including health and life insurance. You're on your own when if you're self-employed, which means you have to be prepared to pay for the same benefits if you want them.

Telecommuting Employment

When looking for telecommuting employment, why not start out with your current employer? Write up a proposal and present it to your boss. There are so many applicants for each telecommuting job, it can be a long process to find something, so it makes sense to start with your current boss, as they already know your work and the type of employee you are.

When approaching your boss requesting telecommuting employment, be sure to point out all the benefits to him and the company. Telecommuting is becoming a more recognized way to work today, but your boss will still need to be assured that this is going to be a beneficial arrangement.

Why do you want telecommuting employment? Is it to care for your kids or an aging parent? You should be upfront about your reasons, but also be very clear about how you plan to handle the arrangement. For example, you can explain that you have help for the hours you would be working. Or that you will be doing the majority of your work when your spouse is there to help. It is important to your employer that you are able to give your full attention to your work. I am sure they will not be indifferent to your care giving responsibilities, but that is not their concern. They have a job to do and need to know you will do your part.

Describe to your employer what your work area will be like. Do you have an area that is separate from the rest of the distractions of the rest of the house? If so, point that out.

Do you already own some of the equipment that you will need to perform your job at home? Include that in your proposal. You may also want to consider offering to purchase additional equipment that may be necessary, or at least share in the cost.

You will want to highlight all the benefits there will be to the company.

o Telecommuting employees often have a higher morale because they are happier and less stressed about their responsibilities at home.

o Less absenteeism. Have you ever had days when you just don't feel that great? Instead of calling in absent, you are likely to be able to still get some work done if you're home. Or if your child gets sick, you don't have to take off work - you can work at home.

o If office space is tight, telecommuting can be an answer to the problem. You can still be producing while off site.

o Increased retention. When employees are happy and less stressed, they are more likely to stay in their present job.

If you present all of this to your employer but are turned down, do not give up on the idea of telecommuting employment. It may be time to look around for something else. You can approach other companies in your local area or expand your search to the internet. When looking on the internet, make sure you are going with reliable websites that post only legitimate telecommuting jobs.

If you have decided that this is the way for you to go, persevere until you find a telecommuting arrangement. It may take some time, but don't give up.
