Make Money at Home With Online Careers - Try Telecommuting!


Did you know that you can make money at home? Many employers today allow workers to have online careers. This offers you a chance to work according to your own schedule, and enjoy the other benefits that virtual jobs provide. One of those benefits is you don't spend as much money when you telecommute. Your car expenses are much less, since you're not driving to work each day.

This also means less traffic related stress, and reduced childcare expenses. You won't be eating in fast-food restaurants as often, since you can prepare your breakfast and lunch in your kitchen. There's no need for you to buy new clothes to wear, since your new work attire would be your PJs. When you add the benefits all together, these are excellent reasons to make money at home.

Two of the many companies that offer these online careers are:

Deloitte - Deloitte is among the largest accounting and services businesses in the United States, and offers online careers for its workforce. Located in New York, this company won top spot in the Fortune, 100 Best Companies to Work For, for telecommuting in 2011, ranked by CNNMoney. Deloitte recognizes that telecommuting allows its workers to make money at home, and to enjoy a wonderful work-life balance.

Deloitte also had the most telecommuters, of the top 82 companies in the 2011 Best Companies to Work For. This report stated that a minimum of 86% of Deloitte's workforce wound up telecommuting, at least 20% of their work week. The company retained its position in the 2011 "Top 100" list, while offering employees the opportunity to telecommute. The pay varies at the company, depending on qualifications and position.

Cigna - This is among the largest of the health insurance companies worldwide. Cigna is located in Bloomfield, Connecticut, and has about 3,000 virtual employees. These workers, with the help of a direct phone line, a headset and a computer, assist Cigna's customers in a number of professional ways.

Cigna offers both part and full-time online careers through an work program that involves contract managers, case managers, claims coordinator, data and provider relations analysts. Cigna provides excellent virtual employment for people who are searching for a way to make money at home. The pay is position dependent, and based on skills and qualifications.

Deloitte and Cigna are just two examples of Fortune 500 companies making virtual employment a reality. There are many more opportunities you can explore.

Find Real Telecommute Careers


Before traipsing onto the web, wading through the muck of telecommute web sites, the first thing you want to do is create a professional website. I created my site and professional email inbox at Microsoft Office Live. It's free, easy and they have additional tools you can use as a Virtual Professional, such as SkyDrive, for document storage.

The main thing to remember is NEVER, EVER under ANY circumstances pay a fee or for a "list" of companies that hire telelcommuters. Why? Not necessarily because it's a ripoff but they aren't offering anything that you can't get for free.

Having spent so much time on various sites and applying, bidding and getting nowhere, I can, without reservation recommend the following sites... FREE SITES, for you to create an account with and place bids for jobs. (For more information on bidding, follow my articles. I'll be writing that article next).

Elance

Elance is one of the most well-known bid platforms. You get a free account and 10 free bids per month. There are options for paid membership but it is up to you to determine when, and if, you want to go that route. They charge a fee, per hour, but that is added to the payment the Client/Vendor makes to you AFTER you've done the job and they submit payment. The other benefits of Elance are the online timer, which takes webshots to verify to the employer you are working on their project when you say you are; and, Escrow. With Escrow, the Client/Vendor has to put the funds with Elance. In the event there would be a dispute, Elance uses the online tracker and information to determine if you've worked and should get paid or if the Client is right not to pay you. In over a year, with Elance, I have never had this issue. With the free account, you can only bid on one Category; however, if you want to change it, you can.

Freelancer

Freelancer is also free to join. They, too, charge a fee from the Client/Vendor. They also offer paid memberships but allow 40 bids per month. They don't offer a tracking system, like Elance. And, although they do not require payment verification, they offer the ability for you, as the job seeker, to click on a link under the Clients name to see if their payment has been verified so you KNOW you will get paid for the work. A bid plus for this site is you can choose up to 25 categories to bid in, which can be changed at any time.

Guru

Guru also has free membership services; however, unlike Elance and Freelancer, the fee is charged to the worker (you) so that needs to be kept in mind when placing bids on projects. With their free account, you get 10 free bids per month but they do offer Bid Packs, where you can purchase a small or large amount of additional bids. The drawback here is you can only sign up for one specialty, such as Admin Support, Legal, Finance, Web... and so on. You can only bid on those requests that a Client lists in your category. Once you select that category, it cannot be changed. A new profile would have to be created.

There are also a few sites that list companies that list legitimate freelance/telecommute jobs, with no strings attached.

Rat Race Rebellion

This site is provided by Staffcentrix, a training and development company that designed the first virtual-work training programs for the US Department of State and the US Armed Forces. Since 1999, they have been showing organizations and people how to work virtually. They were also premiered on The View in December.

Homeworkers

They have a work at home database that allows you to enter criteria and locate companies that are hiring for positions you want to fill. No strings attached!

I am certain there are other legitimate sites like ODesk and People Per Hour; however, I have had no luck getting any projects with them at this time so I cannot really promote how good or bad they are.

Telecommuting Careers - The New Office Jobs


Office jobs were once something that many people sought, either through entry-level positions or through the process of a college education. Either way, people did whatever it took to make the most of their careers, and office jobs in corporate America were easy to find. However, there are fewer offices in need of people these days, as many are streamlining their businesses or have the full staff that they need. Many companies don't have the overhead to afford such a full staff like they might have had in the past, which is why they look to the home office for opportunities. Telecommuting careers are at an all-time high, both with traditional companies and with freelance positions, and this is likely to remain the same for some time to come.

Telecommuting careers allow people to perform their jobs from home, saving companies money by not having to have a dedicated office space for those who work from home. It can also save companies money when they hire freelance employees on a contract basis. That way, they aren't on the actual payroll and can be paid differently than everyone else. Plus, the company doesn't have to offer them benefits because they are a contract employee. The employee can work from home on his or her own and is responsible for paying their own taxes. This is one of the many reasons that a lot of companies are turning to telecommuting as a means of hiring employees.

If you are considering telecommuting careers, you'll need to determine where you stand. Are you looking to turn your current career into a telecommuting position or are you in need of a whole new position altogether? It's completely up to you, which gives you the chance to take hold of your career future and do what works best for you. Because of their remote nature, telecommuting careers are usually a little more stable which surprises many people. You would think that these positions are less stable because you don't actually work FOR a company, but in reality, they're saving money with your services versus having a full-time employee on staff. Therefore, when money is an issue, they'll generally keep the service that is costing them less rather than the employee that's a part of the company directly.

There are many advantages to telecommuting careers. Not only do you get the convenience of working from home, but you'll also be able to make a decent living and have a secure job that you enjoy. If you're not very self-focused or task-oriented, you might not be suited for working at home. However, if you have what it takes to make yourself get up and work every day, then a telecommuting career might be just what you've always needed.

Telecommuting careers received a lot of attention when gas prices were beyond insufferable in 2008. Today they are still popular not just because of the gas savings but the convenience and flexibility with scheduling. Parents with busy schedules, employees with part time jobs and injured workers have all taken the telecommuting leap.

Tailor your career guide to use two ways to secure a position that allows you to work out of your own home. You can negotiate converting your current position into a telecommute opportunity - should this be an option based on what you do. The second option is to seek out and apply for a position that is already classified as a telecommuting role.

Important factors to consider when taking on such a change in environment include your own abilities to manage time, communicate, multitask and of course whether or not you can differentiate between professional responsibilities and home responsibilities. A career guide will help you organize your telecommute options.

Here are ten popular telecommuting careers:

1. Anything computer related i.e., graphic design, software design or even website consultation.

2. Writing has become a phenomenal way to make money online through blogging or website content.

3. Customer service is ideal for those who have people skills, a phone line and a reliable computer.

4. Virtual administrative assistants are another hot commodity on the rise.

5. Transcribing and billing services for the medical, legal and IT industries are also in high demand.

9. Data entry is an old profession but it's still a paying profession and one you can do from home.

When pursuing a new telecommute position - as opposed to converting your existing job - the key to success is being able to identify transferable skills to the new role. You should also have a space (preferable an office) in which you can work without distractions. This area should be separate from the rest of your home in that it will allow you to focus on your responsibilities. Write down potential work space areas in your career guide.

Be cautious if you plan to seek a new position. Thoroughly check out the position and company to make sure everything is legitimate. Use a section of your career guide to list opportunities and then investigate each one. With the rise of interest in work at home jobs, come the rise of scams for these positions. You want to make money not lose it.

So just how do you find these positions? Don't you hate when people tell you what you should do, but don't explain how to actually do it? Check out Virtual Vocations.
