Preparing Your Home Office For Telecommuting

When getting a home office set up to take on telecommuting work, many people tend to spend all their money on the frills. While it's nice to have beautiful flowers or lighthouses to look at while you work, they're not as important to have as some other items are. It's best to leave the frills until you have the important things in place.

Here are some things you should take into consideration for your office:

The computer - This will be your most important piece of equipment in your home office, so you should focus on getting your computer ready for taking on the work at home jobs. The best option would be to have a computer used specifically for business reasons, but not everyone can do that when starting out.

Your personal computer could be used, but there are some things that you need to keep in mind. The computer you use should be in good working order and you should delete any files that aren't needed or burn them onto CD's to free up space on your computer. The more disk space you have, the better off you'll be.

Virus/Spyware programs - Don't work without these programs. The reason why this is so important is because you're not only protecting your computer, but you're also protecting the company you will be working for. Imagine spreading a virus or Trojan on to the company's computer. They may not take too kindly to it.

Keep your computer protected. There are many free spyware and adware programs out there as well as virus programs. If possible, consider a paid version of a virus program. They usually update their databases automatically to catch any new bugs that are popping up all the time.

And they usually scan your emails for any threats without you having to do anything.

Phone - If you're the job you're applying to or planning to apply requires you to have a phone, then seriously consider getting a phone dedicated for your job.

It's certainly possible to use your personal phone, but keep in mind; you or anyone within your household should not be receiving calls during the time you will working.

The choice of using a landline, wireless or internet phone will depend on the company or position you're applying for. If you will be using the phone quite often, then a landline would be the best choice. Wireless and internet phones can easily break connections without warning, so stick to the landlines unless you won't need a phone much.

Working Space - It isn't necessary to have an actual room dedicated to your office, but you should find a space that you can work without a lot of distractions; especially from noise. You need to be able to work in a comfortable place, so pick out a good chair to sit in; even if you're only going to be working at the kitchen table.

If you have a budget set up to create an office space for yourself; first consider putting money into your computer, phone and comfort items. Then take what you have left over and use it on any frills you may like to have. It's fine to decorate your office with the best decorative things you can buy, but those things can wait until everything is ready.

Telecommuting Careers - The New Office Jobs

Office jobs were once something that many people sought, either through entry-level positions or through the process of a college education. Either way, people did whatever it took to make the most of their careers, and office jobs in corporate America were easy to find. However, there are fewer offices in need of people these days, as many are streamlining their businesses or have the full staff that they need. Many companies don't have the overhead to afford such a full staff like they might have had in the past, which is why they look to the home office for opportunities. Telecommuting careers are at an all-time high, both with traditional companies and with freelance positions, and this is likely to remain the same for some time to come.

Telecommuting careers allow people to perform their jobs from home, saving companies money by not having to have a dedicated office space for those who work from home. It can also save companies money when they hire freelance employees on a contract basis. That way, they aren't on the actual payroll and can be paid differently than everyone else. Plus, the company doesn't have to offer them benefits because they are a contract employee. The employee can work from home on his or her own and is responsible for paying their own taxes. This is one of the many reasons that a lot of companies are turning to telecommuting as a means of hiring employees.

If you are considering telecommuting careers, you'll need to determine where you stand. Are you looking to turn your current career into a telecommuting position or are you in need of a whole new position altogether? It's completely up to you, which gives you the chance to take hold of your career future and do what works best for you. Because of their remote nature, telecommuting careers are usually a little more stable which surprises many people. You would think that these positions are less stable because you don't actually work FOR a company, but in reality, they're saving money with your services versus having a full-time employee on staff. Therefore, when money is an issue, they'll generally keep the service that is costing them less rather than the employee that's a part of the company directly.

There are many advantages to telecommuting careers. Not only do you get the convenience of working from home, but you'll also be able to make a decent living and have a secure job that you enjoy. If you're not very self-focused or task-oriented, you might not be suited for working at home. However, if you have what it takes to make yourself get up and work every day, then a telecommuting career might be just what you've always needed.

Don't Join the Line at the Unemployment Office - How to Keep a Work at Home Job

You've landed the perfect work at home job; so now what? Part of establishing yourself as a home-based professional is to advance your career. With traditional brick-and-mortar type jobs, advancing is much easier due to daily in-office performance assessments. Telecommuting jobs offer different advancement challenges; especially since there is already distance between you and your employer. Here are some tips on how to keep and advance in a home-based job.

One of the most crucial points in any home-based job is to make you known. Always be on time to work and allow instant messenger, email and voice accounts be ready to receive calls. If not done by your employer, set a designated schedule so co-workers and clients can reach you immediately. When not working, allow voice mail messages or other communication devices to specify your hours of availability, and when a caller or email sender can expect to receive a reply. If able to, work beyond your posted hours and still show availability. This will show your company you are truly dedicated to your job and not just a "clock watcher".

Another tip is to be proactive rather than reactive. If there is work that needs to be done, and you are capable of doing it; go ahead and get the job done. The same can be said when on company time and all work has been completed, to either ask for additional work or make use of the time for professional development. Reading-up on company news, new clients and changes to business protocol will help you become better informed about the company; especially if one day, you are offered a supervisory position.

The most important tip any work at home employee can use it to take advantage of feedback. Be sure to thank your supervisor for any positive feedback and implement any suggested changes. Keeping a supervisor happy and having excellent evaluations will help establish you as a long-term employee. This will also help make the transition from one work at home company to the next easier, as an excellent performance record and satisfied supervisor will boost your telecommuting employment references.
