Telecommuting Tips From An Industry Specialist

Working from home can be a very rewarding experience. But it also requires more focus than a typical job outside the home.

If you have decided telecommuting is the way to go for you, be sure you read as much as you can about it before moving forward. You will need to be prepared not only mentally to work alone for many hours at a time. You will need to prepare your home office as well.

Because you will be spending many hours in your office, you will want it to be as comfortable as possible. Keep ergonomics in mind when purchasing your desk and chair. Particularly when it comes to the chair, it's always best to spend a little extra to have the comfort you need.

You will also want to have up to date software and hardware when it comes to technology. This is another key telecommuting tip to remember. Your RAM, hard drive, and processor should all be fairly high speed and no more than three years old. As for software, you will want an upgraded office suite (document, spreadsheet and presentation programs), as well as current anti-virus and firewall software. Each company can differ in their requirements so you will also need to check their websites as you go.

The application process can be long and drawn out at times. Working from home is extremely popular, so the competition is pretty high for those jobs. Be sure to read everything thoroughly as you move through each step. One mistake could potentially take you out of the running. Additionally, you will need to be patient as it can take time for recruiters and/or hiring managers to get back to you.

You may also need to complete tests for typing speed, grammar and technology skills. If the position requires skills you may not have, such as sales, you may want to pass on applying. Many home-based call center opportunities require a fairly high level of sales experience and you will be closely monitored on your quotas or metrics.

Be sure you have an updated resume and a unique cover letter prior to applying for work at home positions. If you have worked from home before, remember to include that in your resume. Especially if you have worked for a company from home for two or more years.

Never assume that because a job is home-based that it is any easier than one outside the house. Many times it can be even labor intensive as communication is essential. You will most likely be making more phone calls and sending more emails than you normally would in a corporate office.

Working from home is a great option for many and I encourage you to try it if you can!
