A telecommuting job from home can be an exciting opportunity for anyone. While working from home is great, it can take a little getting used to, especially since you will have more free time than your used to. Since you are in charge of your time and when you get your work done, you will look at your job in a whole new way. Here are some simple steps to get you started on your new venture working from home.

1. Make an appropriate workspace - Working from home is really no different than working in an office when it comes to the space you are using. Make sure you have an area in your home that you can go to that is quiet and you won't be disturbed. This includes a desk that is set up for you to comfortably maneuver throughout the day. Remember, you will be sitting at your desk in your home office like you would if you were in any other office, so you want to make sure it's comfortable. You should be able to sit in a position that does not cause strain or discomfort on your neck, back wrist etc. Invest in a nice desk and chair; you will thank yourself in the long run.

2. Create a system to track your time - Depending on how your company is set up, you may be required to enter your hours online each week. I recommend using a notebook or calendar system to write down this information, especially for those busy days when you are juggling several projects. It's easy to think you will remember what you've done but trust me, I learned quickly that the days go by too fast and it's really hard to recall what I did each day!

3. Keep track of your bills - Most home office expenses are tax deductible in some form or another so keep track of all your utility bills, home improvement bills, internet, phone etc. Contact your accountant for further information as it applies to your state.

4. Set boundaries - With having such a flexible work environment, it's easy to get sidetracked watching TV or doing the laundry. If you set boundaries for yourself, you will find you are much more productive. I tend to work in 2 hour blocks of time because that works best for me. It may take some trial and error to find what works best for you. Don't be afraid to try new things. In most instances, you are probably free from the typical 9-5 hours of getting your work done. If you work better at night, go for it (assuming you are still meeting your deadlines).

5. Check your insurance -Does your insurance company have you rated as a high mileage driver? Call to inquire and let them know you are now working from home, there is a chance this may reduce your premium. If you are bringing clients to your home or if you are driving for business purposes, your insurance agent needs to know this because there may be special endorsements that need to be added to your policies. It is best to contact your insurance agent to find out the laws in your state.

6. Take a look at your budget - Since you are working from home, the chances are pretty good you are not spending as much as you were when you were driving to and from work. Working from home not only allows greater flexibility, it can also mean big savings on your budget. You will likely find savings in categories like gas and dining out. Since you won't be driving to work and you likely won't have the typical office lunch out, this can add up to big savings. You could apply this extra cash to savings or paying down debt.

Working from home is a great opportunity to create a flexible lifestyle for yourself. I am lucky enough to only need a laptop and a broadband card to get my job done. How Can I Find "Bonafide" Work at Home Jobs?


I bet if you are reading this you have tried and tried so hard to come across some really good and "Bonafide" home jobs. You probably spent a lot of money to get a bunch of nothing or just maybe you are just too LAZY to do the footwork to find out if there is actually something worthwhile out there. I am not trying to offend you... but for those of you who are in this category, you know I am talking about you!

Anything in life requires research. You have to find out in order to try it. Sometimes it takes trial and error on our part in order to find out. Everyone has their own opinion on what is legit, what works for them and what recommendations we can give. Well leave it to people like us (thank god for people like us), who have to do the research, spend the money and learn from our mistakes.. We are those that spread the word on what companies call themselves "LEGIT" and what companies identify themselves as "BONAFIDE" companies out there so you don't have to. Your task is to find us out!

I realized throughout my research of work at home or telecommuting jobs, many online sites claim they are the legit ones, or just have the words legit period. This scares me a bit. I have literally eliminated the word "legit" out of my career vocabulary. If I had missed some, then they will be updated soon... So with my background in Unemployment Insurance, I decided that I would search for employers that fall under the guidelines of the official State regulations. These are the guidelines that I used to base my search:

No fixed rule can govern when employment is "bona fide," but the following factors should be considered:

1. The manner in which the employment was obtained.

2. Whether the employment was in the regular course of the employer's business.

3. Whether the employer had previously hired someone for the job.

4. Whether the employment is in your usual occupation. Now due to the economy, we have broadened our skills which allows us to open our own variety of labor markets.

5. Whether the wages for the employment is equivalent or close to the wages of your usual occupation.

You have to really do your legwork (RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH) in seeking what it is out there. I found it and I am eager to say these programs are working for me. If someone told you that you can do all this stuff for free and you can find online jobs quick, well they are certainly lying. You DO have to spend some time and of course, some money if you plan on being SELF-EMPLOYED and starting your career within it. Think of it as an investment for your newfound business. When you see a lot of ads indicating "Don't get scammed!" well true, take heed, but every last one of us has a different experience and we all have different tastes on what can earn us money. In order to succeed sometimes you have to take a loss in order to get a gain. Not to say your destined for failure, I am merely saying that you should be "smart" and do your homework before you step into anything. So all in all you will have to spend something! And don't forget RESEARCH!

Finding Telecommute Employment: The dream of just about everyone is to work from home. Some call it the 30 second commute down the hall to the laptop. The challenge is in finding these jobs.

First, what is a telecommute job and, more importantly, do they even exist?

They involve earning your living just like always, but you never leave home. All of your work is done over the internet. And yes, they definitely exist. Many people now earn their living from the kitchen table. Some are salespeople, others are data entry people and others do all sorts of things as they work from home.

If you seek telecommute employment, you can start on the internet itself. Start with simple searches like "work from home jobs" and see where that takes you. Also,

Forums are a great way to meet people who can offer experience or are doing what you hope to do. Be specific in your web searches, name career names, product names or companies you want to inquire about.
One thing you should never have to do is pay up front for information or leads. Some of these places are expert at collecting your money and little else. The information you seek is free.
The basics you will need at home is internet access, a computer and some area to work in. If you will be involved with talking on the telephone, make sure that your work area can be made silent while you are on the phone.
What is becoming extremely popular is for people to create their own work from home. What is involved here is building their own web site.
This may seem like rocket science, but it actually isn't. It does require patience, though and the will to stay at it. You can have a web site page hosted for free like at Squidoo or Hubpages.com or, for a tiny fee, at other places.
Google has an excellent free library of lessons and courses that can be taken free. So do the other two places mentioned above.
You'll need something to sell so you make inquiries about affiliate programs where basically, someone else produces a product and you sell it. They handle shipping and everything. It's the best way to start creating your own form of telecommute employment.

Whatever you do, remember that the internet is still in its infancy and there are not many rules, regulations or laws to govern it. It is much like the old wild American west. There are plenty of con men and snake oil salesmen who will take your coin and hand you dirt.

Telecommute employment is real and it is growing by leaps and bounds as office and shop space is becoming more and more expensive and companies become desperate to save money. You can also create your own. Whatever you do, go slowly and you will do well.

Guarding Your Personal Information When Applying For Telecommuting Jobs


When I find a good job lead, I will post it on several work at home forums with the word "Unresearched" in bold. Of course it simply means the job lead hasn't been well...researched. A lot of scammers are very good at making a not-so-legitimate job very legitimate sounding which is why doing your own due diligence is so very important. A lot of times people will respond to my post with "Thanks for the great job lead! I applied." Wait a second! Back up! You said you applied?

At this point, I'm hoping they saw the first and bold word Unresearched at the top of the page before jumping in with both feet and shooting off an email with all their personal information on it.

First, you should only have your first and last name and email address on your resume unless you're 150% sure it's a reputable and legitimate company. Too many times people have provided sensitive information that ended up in the wrong hands. It's much too late to think of it after the fact.

Finding a telecommuting job is a huge and stressful task as is and you don't need to deal with the extra stress of not knowing where or who has your personal information.

In no particular order, here are some ways to conduct your research.

1. Check with BBB.org to see if there are any complaints. If they aren't listed it doesn't necessarily mean they are good to go.

2. Check with Federal Trade Commission - ftc.gov

3. Check the company for a physical location. A legitimate company will freely provide street address and telephone number.

4. Check if they have a website. Sometimes a website will have warning signs if it isn't legit such as grammar and spelling errors, poor English and so forth.

5. Ask around various work at home forums if anyone has/had any experience with them.

6. Check the company's references. Request a list of their employees or ICs or contractors and then contact them and ask how it has worked for them.

These are just a few ways and the most important one to live by? If it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is.

Remember, never give your social security number, credit card, passport information or drivers license to anyone unless it is requested and you know for sure the company is reputable and legitimate.

Keeping a supervisor happy and having excellent evaluations will help establish you as a long-term employee. If you work from home, you probably find yourself in the position where you just don't have the time to keep your office clean and organized. Finding and Becoming a Telecommuting Employer


Telecommuting is the term coined by an American, Jack Nilles in 1973. It is also called as e-commuting or e-work or tele-work or work-at-home. Telecommuting is a work arrangement where employers take advantage of the various technological advances and enjoy limited flexibility in working hours and working location. It is a broader term referring to substituting telecommunications for any form of work that requires travel, which consequently eliminates the distance limitations of telecommuting. Some work from home while others use mobile telecommunications technology to work from any location. All telecommuting employers work for tele-workers but not all tele-workers are telecommuting employers.

The motto is 'work is something you do, and not something you travel to.' A successful telecommuting program needs a management style which is mostly based on results and not on a close inquiry of a telecommuting employer. Most legitimate telecommuting companies do not charge you to work for them rather they will pay you for your work. The only exception would be a freelancing company which will take a fee from both you and the employer as a part of the agreement. Gather pertinent information about the company, job requirements or specifications, pay rate etc. and input them into an Excel spreadsheet. There are companies that are always accepting new applications so these are the companies you want to apply with first. Peruse the websites and look for resources and tips on how to conduct your job search, where to find them, and so forth.

Preparing yourself and completing each of these three steps will save you precious time. Now you are more efficient, focused, organized and ready to tackle your work at home job search in a highly competitive work at home job field.

every city and category! Sounds simple right? It is simple, but

you need to stay committed to looking for jobs everyday.

will be your best bet. You need to jump on the jobs the day they

are listed. Is this going to take time on your part? Of course,

but if you're serious about working at home, you will find the time

and it's one that I go to in order to find legitimate leads from

every single day! My husband has even started using it to find

offline jobs in our area.

Jobs That Aren't Conducive To Telecommuting


There are many positions that can be done by telecommuting from home, but there are some jobs out there that aren't possible to telecommute with. Here are some of those jobs that you won't see anyone doing from their own home anytime in the near future:

Notary Public - A Notary public's main job is to witness signatures on legal type documents. The documents would have to be taken to a designated point where they would witness someone signing the appropriate papers for authenticating reasons. Having individuals come to your home to sign the documents isn't professional and can alter the authentication process of the legal papers.

Interior Designing - While some of the work could be done at home like creating designs on the home computer; most of the work would have to be done onsite as measurements would need to be taken and other considerations would need to be done. There would be visits to stores to find the necessary items for the design project. Very little of the work could be done at home.

Hotel Hospitality - This is a position that is better suited doing onsite. It's more of a meet and greet type of position. While there is phone work involved, a lot of in-person tasks would be performed as well.

Real Estate Agent - This type of job involves a lot of computer and phone work, but there needs to be some visiting of homes and businesses in order to make the sales. Prospective buyers can view pictures of the place on a website or call an agent for details, but they will want to see the properties in-person before making a decision. The agents will also need to visit the places that sellers want to put on the market to check for readiness of sale.

Person to Person Sales Positions - There are some sales jobs that can be done from home as long as they are done by computer and phone. The person to person sales jobs need direct contact with the potential customers, which can't be done in a home based office.

Court Reporter - This is a position that is performed in a court room as the proceedings are being done. This is not to be confused with the scoping careers that people work from home helping the court reporters with transcribing files.

Computer Repair/Technicians - This type of work involves direct contact with a user's computers in their homes or places of business. Sometimes the evaluation of the problem includes checking out existing wires in the home or business, so this job isn't suited for telecommuting.

Take a look at each job position out there that you come across and see what the work tasks are for that position. Could they be feasibly done from a home office or do you think they're best suited for onsite work.
